Wireless Overview

Rock Island provides high speed Internet service via a state-of-the-art wireless broadband system. Unlike DSL or cable modem we do not depend on the availability of legacy telephone or cable TV infrastructure. Unlike satellite our performance does not suffer from the delay associated with a 23,000-mile path to and from your computer to the sending server.

A small 12" x 20" antenna mounted on the customer’s home connects directly to one of our base stations. The base stations are in turn connected to a high-speed Ethernet back bone connection to the Internet. The air-link between the customer and the base station is a proprietary system that uses authentication and encryption to protect against rogue users and attackers.

The customer antenna connects to a broadband router via a standard CAT 5 ethernet cable. A surge suppressor and grounding is included to protect the customer’s equipment from lightning or static discharges. An AC adapter powers the antenna over the CAT 5 cable.

The router acts as a firewall to protect the customer’s home network from Internet attackers and is an administrative demarcation point that allows customers to build their home network independently.

System Components

Rock Island's Wireless system consists of a 900Mhz Subscriber Module (SM) which is mounted to the side of your home, this SM is 12" wide by 20" high and has a mounting bracket similar to a satellite dish.

From the SM we run a special shielded outdoor rated CAT5 cable to a lightening suppression box which is about the size of a deck of playing cards, from there we run a standard CAT5 cable into your home. The radio is powered over the CAT5 cable using Power Over Ethernet (POE) which is plugged into a standard power outlet. On one side of the POE device is the radio, on the other is your computer, or broadband router (LinkSys, Dlink, etc).

Radio Installation

Since it is critical that the radio is properly grounded with shielded CAT5 cable, all subscriber installations are done by our trained installers. Our installers will mount the radio to your home, run the shielded CAT5 to the surge suppressor, ground the surge suppressor and then run standard CAT5 into your home.

Equipment Purchase Option

Customers who wish to purchase the Canopy Subscriber Module (SM) for $375.00 will receive a monthly discount of $15 off their service rate for the life of their service. Customers who purchase their Canopy SM can put their service on hold at no cost.

Canopy 900Mhz Connectorized radios with a 13db external antenna are priced at $400 to account for the increased cost of the larger antenna.

Service Speed * Installation Monthly Six Month One Year Services

Subscriber Modules (SM) are included in the price of the service. Customers may opt to purchase the SM if they wish to paint it to match the color of their home. Painting can affect the signal if the wrong paint is used, for that reason we recommend the customer contact us for specific information regarding painting the SM unit.

Accounts may be put on hold for customers that are only in the islands part time, or may be traveling. On hold accounts are charged $5 per month to cover the cost of the equipment that is installed at your home or business. There is a minimum charge of $5 for placing an account on hold. All "on hold" accounts are disabled from accessing the Internet.

Wireless Inquiry Form - All Fields Are Required

Note: The information you provide here will allow us to contact you about our Wireless service. Typically we will call or email you to set up a time for us to come to your location in order to take a GPS coordinate reading.

We use this GPS coordinate to determine if you are within range of one of our radio transmitters. If you are not within range of an existing transmitter we use the information gathered to plan future transmitter locations.

If it appears service is available while we are taking a GPS coordinate it is possible we can install the radio hardware at that time.
